DNS records explained: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS

Aug 24, 2026 · 4 min read

DNS translates names such as example.com into the addresses and services behind them. You can inspect any domain with our DNS checker.

  • A — maps a name to an IPv4 address.
  • AAAA — maps a name to an IPv6 address.
  • CNAME — an alias pointing one name at another name. It cannot sit at the zone apex.
  • MX — where email for the domain is delivered, with a priority number (lower is preferred).
  • TXT — free text, used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verification.
  • NS — the authoritative name servers for the domain.
  • SOA — zone metadata: primary server, admin contact and refresh timers.
  • CAA — which certificate authorities may issue certificates.
  • PTR — reverse DNS, mapping an IP back to a name; important for mail servers.

TTL

Every record has a TTL (time to live) in seconds. Lower it before a migration so changes spread quickly, then raise it again afterwards.
