What does “unmetered bandwidth” really mean?

Sep 4, 2026 · 3 min read

Unmetered means the provider does not count or cap the amount of data you transfer. Your limit is the speed of the network port.

How much can a 1 Gbps port move?

1 Gbps is 125 MB/s at best. Over a 30-day month, running flat-out, that is roughly 324 TB. Real usage is always far below that, which is why unmetered plans work for most customers.

Fair use

Unmetered plans are for legitimate workloads and are covered by an acceptable-use policy. Abuse that harms other customers — attacks, spam, reselling bandwidth — is not allowed.

Good fits

  • Video streaming and IPTV (with content rights)
  • CDN and file distribution
  • E-commerce with traffic spikes
  • VoIP media relays

Metered vs unmetered

Metered plans give a monthly allowance and may slow or charge after it. If you cannot predict your traffic, unmetered removes the surprise.
